In memory of Glenn "Rocky" Stones

What would you like to tell us about their life?
After school Glenn became an apprentice electrical at Ovaltine in Quoiba. Glenn married Bronwyn Parsons and they had 2 children, Andrew and Emma. They lived in West Pine after they were married. Later on he followed in his parents footsteps by purchasing a farm on Isandula Rd, Gawler. He obviously had an entrepreneurial side as I remember visiting the farm and he was raising some ostriches when they were all the rage. In the early 90's he had surgery after a brain tumour was diagnosed. He was well for a number of years and things returned to normal but the tumour came back and he passed away in 1997 at age 35.
What was their greatest achievement?
Knowing Glenn he would say it was his family. From my point of view it would be the fact that he was one of the most likeable, good natured, genuine people you could ever meet. It wasn't so much a greatest achievement but I remember one time Rocky getting my father out of a lot of trouble. The 3 of us were coming back from a lake fishing trip and my dad got "caught up" with some mates at the Bracknell pub. By the time he got out he wasn't safe to drive so Glenn (15 or 16yo) drove us from Bracknell to Ulverstone at night. My dad remembered the spray I gave him for many a year after that for the position he put us in but it didn't phase Rocky.
What is your fondest memory of them at school?
I remember a school trip to Bells Parade, at lunchtime there were a few fires burning for warmth and to cook some food. I still remember him bursting into (quite loud) song in that country twang of his, "Put another log on the fire, cook me up some bacon and some beans.....". He got through a few verses despite the heckling.

Michelle Britton - the last 40 years

Occupation/s? Tell us what you have been doing
I have worked for Centrelink for 27 years, now I am a casual motel housekeeper. Much less stress.
What would you tell your 1977 self if you could send them a message now?
Don't sweat over the small stuff, love yourself for who you are and don't try to change to fit in with the crowd.
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
I left Ulverstone in 1975 when my family moved to Queensland. I married in 1980 to an American Soldier and moved to Hawaii and California (a childhood dream). I have one son and two adorable grandchildren. Two marriages later I am now living in rural Victoria with a wonderful partner and absolutely love where I live. i think it is because it reminds me so much of Tassie.
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
My son and my grandsons. At almost 56 I am proud of all the things I have done in my life to this point. I am caring, honest, friendly and a good person who loves life. I have a beautiful family and some wonderful friends and that is what is important in my life now.
Any regrets?
None, life is a learning experience

David Shipp - the last 40 years

Occupation/s? Tell us what you have been doing
Mine Surveyor, Software Support, Resource Analyst
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
Don College then Devonport Tech for a year each then down the West Coast mines. A year or two at Savage River as a survey assistant then Rosebery for around a decade where I qualified as a mine surveyor. Spent another 6 years living back in Ulverstone and working at Hellyer mine near Waratah as a surveyor. I remember Paul Scarfe spent some time there as well at this time. Moved up to Brisbane with a mining software company briefly then started with the Lotteries, first as Golden Casket and now Tatts in Brisbane. I look after the reporting and rostering in our 40 seat contact centre which has it's challenges. Married Terri from the Huon area around 33 years ago. Her dad worked and socialised with Brent Gaffney in the National Parks service in the brief period before he died. We had two boys, 28 and 30 now off making their way in the world. That means we can spend some time traveling and have done a couple of trips to the UK and NZ and have a few more planned.
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
Raising two boys to become the fine adults they have become with Terri.

Robbie Lehman - the last 40 years

Occupation/s? Tell us what you have been doing
Public Servant / Accountant / Business Analyst
What would you tell your 1977 self if you could send them a message now?
Do not be mates with Geelong supporters comes to mind, they are poor losers and even worse winners! Also, there is no such thing as too much travel.
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
My twenties were variously spent living in Ulverstone, working at Social Security, travelling in Europe (with Craig Faulkner), getting married and drinking at either the River Arms or the RSL Club. Also, playing a decent level of golf and a pretty average standard of country football and cricket, hence my early retirement from both sports. The thirties were about moving to Hobart, going to Uni, working at Hydro, enduring an unwanted (at least it was at the time) divorce and moving to Sydney for a few years. There were no kids from the first marriage which in hindsight was a plus. The forties for me were a return to Hobart, meeting current partner and future wife Emma, working at Woolworths and Hydro (again), overseas holidays (Africa, Asia & Europe), plus plenty of wining and dining. By this stage I had moved from a very fussy 16yo eater who only had a range of about 8 foods to being game to try most things. This last period involved a move to Perth for 5 years, working for Wesfarmers, exploring WA and Bali, the birth of daughter Poppy, the end of our social life (at least temporarily) and a return to Hobart to finally build a house of our own. I now work at Tasracing and they are pretty flexible with hours which is handy having a 5yo starting kinder. I keep in touch with a few old class mates, in particular Craig Faulkner, Chris Bush, Andrew Lawson (brother in law!) and Paul Banks. Plus I run into a few others on the occasional trip to Ulverstone as the bulk of my family still live there.
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
I would have liked to have enjoyed my job a bit more as you do it for a long time and Finance is not exactly the most exciting of careers. However, I have met some great friends and people through work and it has enabled me to provide a good home and periodic travel so it’s not something I dwell on, especially as I can see the finish line coming up in a few years.
Any regrets?
Like a lot of people, having a close and loving family unit is a key achievement. Other than that there are no specific work highlights but rather an overall sense of satisfaction that I have been willing to take up or create opportunities as they presented themselves, e.g. changing careers, moving to different states, travelling, etc. Not everything always worked out to plan but I had a crack and feel pretty lucky and privileged regarding how life has worked out so far.

Janine Griffin (Hyland) - the last 40 years

Occupation/s? Tell us what you have been doing
Nurse
What would you tell your 1977 self if you could send them a message now?
Hard work pays out.
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
I would not change anything in my life over the last 40 years thanks to a wonderful supportive husband and family.
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
As a mature age student achieving my Diploma in Nursing then a Grad Dip in Cancer Nursing which led me to my current position and wonderful children who are making great achievements of their own.
Any regrets?
No

In memory of Philip Abbott

What would you like to tell us about their life?
Philip Abbott lived in Richardson Street West Ulverstone. He was a keen sailor up until leaving Ulverstone after year 12 to go New South Wales to study Agriculture, his other love. “Abbo" as he was affectionately known, (politically incorrect today!!) was a big guy with a big laugh, he was close friends with Paul Banks, Leon Weaver, Lachlan and Robert Pease plus many others. Philip died in a car crash in NSW in April 1988 at the age of 26. At this time he was engaged, the wedding was to be a couple of months later. I am sure his great chuckle will live on in our memories!
What was their greatest achievement?
Probably heading off to NSW to study away from family and friends, not an easy thing to do. Unfortunately the accident robbed Abbo of the chance to do a lot of other things he would no doubt have excelled at. His group of friends remember him as a very nice bloke.
What is your fondest memory of them at school?
A fair amount of good natured sledging came Philip's way during school but he was not an easy target and was always ready with a response. He didn't take it too seriously as his booming laugh was always heard very regularly. He did used to cop a bit of flak for being the owner of a very slow sailing boat.

Wendy Poynton (van Essen) - the last 40 years

Occupation/s? Tell us what you have been doing
1978 -1981 Employed by Poynton's Nurseries, 1982-1985 work at several part time jobs, contract cleaner, mail sorting, playgroup assistant. 1987- 1990 worked as a process worker at Perfecta, 1990- 2012 went to work at Australian Weaving mills in Devonport as a weaver, gradually working my way up to being a supervisor, 17 years on nightshift...yikes not sure how I survived! The factory closed down so there I was at 50+ thinking I need a new career! I spotted an advert for real estate training in the Advocate and decided to give it a go. Passed the exam and was lucky enough to get a job at Harcourts in Ulverstone, I have now been selling houses for over three years and loving it!
What would you tell your 1977 self if you could send them a message now?
I would have continued on at school and become the teacher I always aspired to be. Perhaps would have loved to have travelled before settling down to marriage.Don't take life so seriously and make the most of your lives.
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
I left school and went to work with my then boyfriend Kerry Poynton who I went on to marry just after my 18th birthday, we have been married almost 37 years...who said we would not last...lol. We went on to have two wonderful kids Hayley in 1981 and Brian in 1985, Hayley is married and living in Penguin and have given us two gorgeous granddaughter to spoil. Brian has just moved back to Ulverstone with his partner and works as the spare parts manager at Motors in Burnie.
Kerry and I have travelled a bit to N.Z., parts of Europe and twice to Koh Samui in Thailand. Kerry is now retired but guess I will have to plod on for a bit longer. We hope to do some more travelling over the next few years. All in all we have had a good life so far...bring on new adventures!!
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
Family would have to be my greatest achievement, my kids have turned out to be lovely young productive adults. I am also proud of the progress I have made in my current career becoming one of the highest selling real estate agents in Ulverstone.
Any regrets?
Losing touch with old friends, I guess we all get wrapped up in our busy lives. Would have loved to have travelled more when I was younger and wish I'd had someone to give us financial advice so we could have retired together...would have been nice. Apart from that life has been pretty good after all it is what you make of it , so don't waste a day!

When I first left school I worked at the Four Square Shop at the top of Reibey Street, then worked at Coles for several years and Edgells. Once my son was born I worked for my stepfather on the Potato Harvester around local farms then I got my self into Office work as it fitted in with school hours better. I am now a Book Keeper working full time
What would you tell your 1977 self if you could send them a message now?
Make sure you get through the basics at school because there is plenty of time to choose the direction you want to take, you don't have to make that decision right here right now. Don't worry about the small stuff it will all work out in the end. What will be will be you have no control over things you should just make the best out of each situation. Enjoy your time at school because it really is a place in time that you make friends and memories that you will have for the rest of your life. Everyone is different and has different ways & that's OK too.
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
I married in 1986, had my son Jared in 1988 and separated in 1990. I have remarried a 2nd time to Mark Yaxley (Sammy). We have been together coming 27 years and married for 23 years. We have lived on the Sunshine Coast Queensland coming 13 years, my son Jared (29) lives here on the Coast near us and has 1 daughter Harlow, I have a stepdaughter Kristy (35), she and her fiancée have 7 children and live at Crows Nest Qld, I also have a stepson Ashley (33), he and his wife and 3 children also live at Crows Nest Qld. We do miss family and friends in Tassie but do love the climate up here and having our kids and grandkids all with in driving distance is the best thing.
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
I suppose I am grateful and lucky that our combined family all get on and we have a close relationship. When we are all together we have a houseful and we are all squashed in & extremely busy but that is half the fun.
Any regrets?
Yes I probably have quite a few but can I do anything about them..No. So I believe you just keep on going and make the best out of life.

Learn to listen and listen to learn, attend school every day, enjoy the experience and appreciate the people who have taken the time to help and guide you through the journey of life.
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
I will start by saying that life has been kind to me, I have been married for 32 years to Paul, have two kind and beautiful sons, Kallan (30) and Bentley (28). On leaving school I worked at Coles for 10 years, got married and had my children. In 1990 my husband and I purchased the North Motton store, a small convenience store, post office and petrol station which we ran for 7 years. In 1997 my husband and I purchased a local milk run which covered the Ulverstone area for the next 7 years. During this time I have been employed at the Don College working with year 11 and 12 students as a disability support worker for ten years and a support worker for students at risk for 11 years, a job I love every day. On a casual basis I work at the Burnie hospital as an attendant enjoying my time in the areas of Dementia and palliative care, challenging but rewarding. We travelled around Australia in 2006 - 2007 for 14 months, covering a lot of Australia and hope to continue our travels in the not to distant future. We are off to Bali this year, our youngest son is getting married, no grandchildren as yet but I imagine that will be the next exciting and blissful part of our families journey together. I'm looking forward to the 40 year reunion, to catch up with those I have not seen since school, those I have not seen for a while and to remember those that have passed.
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
Greatest achievement are my two sons, a caring husband and to acknowledge that I was able to achieve many things in life with hard work, resilience and commitment.
Any regrets?

Generally been working in child care since 1995. Have done some bar and gaming work at Ulv RSC a few years back but now returned to working at Discovery Early Learning Centre at East Ulverstone.
What would you tell your 1977 self if you could send them a message now?
not to sweat the small stuff - enjoy being young and free.
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
I married my childhood sweetheart - Jim Brinkman in 1980 at the very young age of nearly 19. We built our home in Ulverstone and had two beautiful children, Chris in 1985 and Melissa in 1987. I was fortunate enough to be a stay at home mum until I chose to work at the Ulverstone child care centre (which everyone at the time referred to it as humpty dumpty). I am very fortunate to have a good life surrounded by good friends and family. As our children grew and went their own way so too did Jim and I, so in 2008 after 32 years of being together ( Jim & I began dating in '76 when I was in grade 9 some of you may remember me being picked up some days after school in Jim's white HR panel van much to the dislike of the teachers on duty, I was often summoned to the office the next day to explain why I was being picked up in "that van" haha such a rebel I loved it) Jim and I divorced. I am still very close to Jim's family and we all keep in touch which is really nice. I have been fortunate enough to go to Bali twice and have just recently returned from Vanuatu which is where my daughter was married in June '16. I am an extremely proud grandmother of a gorgeous grand daughter who was born to Chris and his beautiful wife Steph in 2014.
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
My children are my greatest achievement, and to still be here to enjoy the rest of my life.
Any regrets?
There is always some regrets in life but overall I feel very satisfied with my life.

Currently semi-retired. Have been a computer programmer, factory worker, sawmill hand, farm hand.
What would you tell your 1977 self if you could send them a message now?
Dont take yourself too seriously. Life will throw many roadblocks in your way. Dont stress over them. Handle as best you can and keep moving.
What would you like to share about the last 40 years?
After high school I went to Hellyer College, then 1 year at uni in Hobart. Got into some serious trouble with the law and spent one year with my parents as a result. Then went to what is now the uni in Launceston, graduating with a science degree. While there I met Patsy Sturzaker, we fell in love and got married at the end of 1984. I still had one year to go to get my degree so Patsy did relief teaching and other work to support us. Ruth, our first child, was born in April 1986. Stillborn. Julie (Triffle) was great helping us cope with this traumatic event. She was one of Patsy's best friends but we now shared another bond of losing a child each. Patsy and I both started umpiring cricket for the NTCA. She was again pregnant but that didn't stop her (nothing much ever did). Matthew was born in April 1987. 1990 saw our third child born, one day before Matthews' third birthday. Jessica became a cot death at 17 days. Words cant really express what we went through then. We questioned every belief we'd ever had, even to the point of turning our back on our Christian faith. That was later restored but we'd lost our trusting belief and questioned many things preached. Our 4th child Anjuli came into the world in 1991. All 4 of our "full term" children were born by C-section, due to Patsy's type 1 diabetes. We also had at least 6 miscarriages. We moved from Launceston to Westbury, then to Deloraine. Patsy's health began to deteriorate. She died in Feb 2002, leaving me with a 14 yo boy and a 10 yo girl. Despite the difficulties faced I am pleased to report that both are now productive young adults. Matthew is in Queensland while Anjuli is a mother of 3 wonderful children aged 8 years to 3 months. Being semi retired I now have plenty of time on my hands - NOT. I'm renovating a house, chauffeur my grandchildren (and daughter) as required just to name a couple of things.
What are you proudest of about your life? What have been your greatest achievements?
Sometimes I amaze myself that I'm still happy and healthy.
Any regrets?
